Completion of the SmartPick Project, Partially Funded by the Basque Government

We are pleased to announce the completion of the SmartPick project, an initiative aimed at developing a semi-automatic and accessible order picking system, especially designed for sectors with low levels of automation. The project has been partially funded by the Basque Government as part of its programs supporting innovation and industrial digitalization.

Context: Intralogistics as a Key Area
Intralogistics, a strategic subsector within logistics, encompasses all internal processes and movements of goods, from their reception to their dispatch to the customer.
Pick To Light Systems (PTLS) is an internationally recognized provider of advanced solutions for intralogistics automation. However, despite the potential of these technologies, many companies have been limited in adopting them due to the need for highly specific and costly infrastructures.
As a result, many environments continue to operate with traditional and even manual methods, unable to benefit from the latest technologies.

Objective of the SmartPick Project
The main objective of SmartPick has been the development of a semi-automatic, multi-tenant order picking system based on Edge Computing, aimed at companies with low levels of automation.
Thanks to this approach, any organization can access advanced solutions without the need for high investments (WMS, specialized hardware, cloud servers, or complex infrastructures).
This removes one of the major barriers to entry in the sector and enables companies of any size to compete with players that have highly automated systems.

Technical Objectives Achieved
To achieve the main objective, the project has worked on the following technological areas:
• Research and analysis of logistics flows in low-automation sectors.
• Research on Edge server solutions without cloud infrastructure requirements.
• Design and development of specific Edge servers for intralogistics support, eliminating the need for additional WMS or ERP systems.
• Creation of a universal interface based on Edge Computing, accessible from iOS and Android devices, enabling system use without investment in specific equipment.
• Optimization of order picking interfaces according to real workflows in low-automation sectors.
• Definition of the complete order picking service under this new approach.

A Step Forward in the Democratization of Automation
The completion of SmartPick marks a milestone for PTLS in its mission to democratize access to intralogistics automation, providing more flexible, efficient, and accessible solutions for all types of companies.
We thank the Basque Government and all the individuals and teams who have contributed to the development of this project.
